Vietnam encourages the export of medical supplies to aid the international fight against COVID-19.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade to increase support for and increase exports of several medical supplies, including antibacterial and anti-drop face masks, to needy countries, particularly those in Europe and the United States.

This is part of the prime minister’s closing remarks at a recent government meeting reviewing COVID-19 prevention measures.

Customers from various markets, including the United States, the European Union, Spain, and, most recently, Russia and Canada, have expressed a growing desire to import medical supplies, such as protective gear, gloves, and face masks, to aid in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, deputy director of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, told the media that customers from various markets have repeatedly inquired about the capacity of Vietnamese companies to provide medical supplies.
“When anchoring at Saint-Petersburg port, Vietnamese businesses must pay close attention to preparing legitimate papers demonstrating that their products are eligible for exportation from Vietnam, as well as other necessary documents,” Thuy said.
Furthermore, the Canadian market is seeing a surge in demand for millions of medical supplies, including single-use N95 face masks, single-use surgical masks, nitrile gloves, vinyl gloves, medical blouses, protective medical gear, hand sanitizer, and protective eyewear, among others.
Functional Canadian bodies will take the lead in selecting export firms and will quickly contact businesses that meet their needs.
Previously, on February 28, 2020, the government passed Resolution No.20/NQ-CP authorizing the export of medical masks during the COVID-19 epidemic.
As a result, while the country is fighting COVID-19, the Ministry of Health will issue licenses allowing the export of medical face masks for the purpose of providing aid and international support on behalf of the Vietnamese government.
This policy does not apply to the export business of export-processing enterprises that have obtained investment certificates, as well as those engaged in the processing of medical masks for foreign clients under contracts signed prior to March 1, 2020.
The Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas) reported an increase in orders for fabric-made face masks shortly after the resolution was passed.
To facilitate business activities during the COVID-19 outbreak, the General Department of Customs has also improved processes for checking the export of fabric-made face masks.
Facilitating the export of fabric masks and other measures aim to help local businesses that are short on export orders due to the pandemic, as many of them were delayed or canceled.
