Making Thanh Hoa a Northern Central Logistics Center

To facilitate investment attraction and trade, Thanh Hoa province’s relevant departments, sectors, and localities have been implementing the Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee’s Decision No 2119/QD-UBND dated June 9th, 2020 in approving the Project of Developing Logistics Services in the Province to 2025, with an orientation to 2030, which will make Thanh Hoa a logistics center of the North.

Nghi Son Economic Zone and other industrial zones in Thanh Hoa province have confirmed their attractiveness in the process of construction and development of transportation infrastructure, attracting many investment projects with relative synchronicity. At the same time, they make significant contributions to shifting labor structure and sector structure, increasing State-budget revenue, creating job opportunities, and acting as a driving force for the province’s and Northern Central region’s socio-economic development.

Nghi Son Economic Zone includes the Nghi Son deep-water port, which is the largest international port in the Northern Central Region and has the potential to become one of Vietnam’s largest ports. According to reports from Thanh Hoa’s Department of Transport, some berths in Nam Nghi Son port have been invested in or are being built (4 general berths of Nghi Son Steel and Iron Company, berth no.6 of Cong Thanh Cement JSC, berths no.7 and no.8 of Long Son Cement Co.,…) and others are being planned for investment (berths no.9 and no.10 of Long Son Cement Co., and others in the container terminal no.2).

On May 9th, 2019, France’s CMA, the world’s third-largest container shipping company, announced the opening of an international container shipping route to Nghi Son. There have been 114 container ships estimated to have entered or exited the port, with 20,000 TEUs of cargo passing through. China’s Container SITC is expected to conduct research and open a number of routes to Inner Asian countries from Nghi Son in May 2021. With developed transportation infrastructure, there will be advantages to utilizing logistics services and multimodal cargo transport via seaports, which will be the potentials and development advantages of Nghi Son seaport in particular and Thanh Hoa province’s seaport system in general. However, preliminary statistics show that the volume of cargo transported by sea from Thanh Hoa accounts for only about 30% of the total amount of cargo circulating through the province each year. To make Thanh Hoa a regional logistics service center, a representative of the provincial Department of Transport revealed that there will be coordination with localities and relevant organizations to implement Decision No.2119/QD-UBND by the Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee on approving the Project of Developing Logistics Service in the Province to 2025, with a focus on 2030.
