Global seaports are critical to the global economy, and global container traffic has increased by 10% on average per year. The steady increase in exports and imports causes major logistical and technical issues around the world. Given this, Big Data and novel emerging digital technologies will undoubtedly benefit shipping and maritime logistics.<\/p>\n

Today, the sea handles more than 80% of the world’s goods transport. As global customers demand more streamlined, faster services, providers must offer solutions to deliver more value throughout the supply chain \u2013 a goal that can only be achieved through digitalization. Digital technologies continue to transform aspects of social life as well as industrial-economic processes, including shipping and logistics.<\/p>\n

EFFICIENCY, SECURITY, AND ENERGY SAVINGS ARE JUST A FEW OF THE MANY BENEFITS THAT THE EMERGENCE OF NUMEROUS DATA TOOLS AND INCREASINGLY ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES CAN PROVIDE.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

GPS navigation, real-time weather, smart containers outfitted with sensors, and RFID transponders are among the tools and technologies put in place to optimize transport and distribution. Data analytics technologies such as telematics systems \u2013 designed to record speed, idling, fuel consumption, and so on \u2013 are used to help reduce wait times and bottlenecks in ports by informing handlers and drivers about container locations and loading\/unloading.<\/p>\n

Digitalization will enable the industry to define the future of shipping by establishing a new framework for how information can flow between parties and new standards of information exchange in this \u201csmart\u201d era.
